Children's Clothing Made Fun With Applique

Applique is a term that comes from the French word 'appliquer', which means 'to put on'. It is a sewing technique used to make or embellish clothing and household linen. Applique is done by layering patches of fabric on top of the foundation fabric. It is stitched in place by hand or by machinery. Applique is vastly different from embroidery, even though applique is a type of embroidery, and they can sometimes produce a similar effect. Embroidery uses colorful threads to create a design on the fabric, whereas, with applique, another fabric shape is sewn into the original. The applique style of embroidery makes for a unique style of clothing. Not only are the patterns intricately designed, but the overlayed fabric also gives off a three-dimensional effect that helps the print stand out.
